Riga: Latvia’s Minister of the Interior, Rihards Kozlovskis, has raised concerns over potential security threats at the country's borders following Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's recent proposal to invite 150,000 Pakistani workers to Belarus.
Speaking on the matter, Minister Kozlovskis said that although the proposal remains merely a suggestion at this stage, the Baltic states and Poland must remain vigilant. He warned that Belarus and Russia could potentially exploit the presence of Pakistani nationals as part of a hybrid warfare strategy against their Western neighbors.
Kozlovskis emphasized that Latvia already has strong border protection measures in place, particularly in the Latgale region along the Belarusian border. He added that infrastructure development is ongoing along the eastern frontier to further strengthen security.
However, he acknowledged that if migration pressure increases significantly, Latvia might once again have to rely on military support and cooperation with its allies to manage the situation effectively.
